Technical and Historical Notes

The SVMS-01AS Union Flag Aerotype Sky Package is a variation of the SVMS-01 Union Flag designed for use in other countries. It is an armed recon unit that is mainly used for infiltrating and gathering intelligence in enemy controlled territory. This also reflects Union's habit of fighting in other nations. In flight mode, the Aero Flag mounts an aero cowl as the nose unit instead of the standard Flag's linear rifle. Unlike the standard Flag that depends on the electromagnetic field from the linear rifle to control airflow and hence reduce air resistance while flying in flight mode, the Aero Flag adopts a more aerodynamic shape to control airflow. As a result, the suit's shape is now closer to that of an aircraft, and boosts better flight capabilities in the atmosphere. Besides having improved mobility, it also has a longer cruising range and achieves high speed flying capabilities. The Aero Flag's wings can be equipped with various equipment, including air-to-ground missiles or bombs. The aero cowl is equipped with various sensors and can separate from the suit in mid-air, whereby it can then function as a recon drone. However, it only has a short operation time, as it is only capable of gliding in the air. The aero cowl also cannot be launched from the ground on its own.

In place of the usual hands is a pair of 60mm linear gauntlets; this new weapon serves as a replacement for the removed linear rifle and is the Aero Flag's main weapon. The loss of the hands makes it closer to an aircraft than a mobile suit, but it can still change into a humanoid form, even if it can't engage in melee combat. Thus, in terms of mobile suit performance, its versatility has been greatly reduced. The most famous Aero Flags are the ones stationed in the Elmendorf Base in Alaska, which have a longer nose unit than the standard Aero Flags, as well as a grey color based camouflage pattern on their armor surface. The camouflage pattern is achieved through the use of nanomachines applied to the armor surface, hence it can change according to the operation area by controlling the nanomachines. The Aero Flag squad at Elmendorf is also known as the "North Shield" for their defensive function, but also the "North Spear" offensively. This squad is involved in several missions outside the U.S., and one of its most famous pilots is Joshua Edwards.
