Based on the data from the Crossbone Gundams, the Earth Federation's Strategic Naval Research Institute secretly develops the XM-10 Flint to be a new mass production mobile suit for the Crossbone Vanguard. Though it bears many outward signs of its predecessors, the Flint's design is heavily simplified, making it a more general purpose machine. However, the Flint retains the X-thrusters of the Crossbone Gundams, giving it higher speed and maneuverability. It also features a wide variety of ranged and melee weapons, most of which are inspired by the Crossbone Gundams. The Flint sees a very limited production run, as it's only intended to be a trial mass production machine and most of the Vanguard's ace pilots are killed in the battle between the Federation and later the Jupiter Empire. The Vanguard's surviving aces Umon Samon, Yona and Jared each receive a Flint, which they use in the final battle against Crux Dogatie's Jupitris 9 and his army of EMA-10 Divinidad mobile armors. After the conflict ends, the three veterans join the third Crossbone Vanguard under Tobia Arronax's encouragement, and use their Flints both as combat machines and worker mobile suits under the guise of Blackrow Shipping. The Flints' last deployment sees them fighting the Jupiter Empire's Amakusa, which uses a powerful artificial intelligence based on the legendary RX-78-2 Gundam pilot Amuro Ray. Though the Vanguard pilots are skilled, they are completely outclassed by the Amakusa and all three Flints are destroyed. However, Amuro's spirit manages to sense that the Jupiter Empire is the real enemy, and so the Amakusa only disabled the Flints, allowing the pilots to escape in their Core Fighters.
