In early C.E. 71, the prototype GAT-X102 Duel Gundam is stolen by ZAFT at the Orb Union's space colony Heliopolis. ZAFT later upgrades the Duel Gundam with an "Assault Shroud" of supplemental armaments. The Earth Alliance applies similar enhancements to suits based off the Duel Gundam, such as the GAT-01D Long Dagger and GAT-01D1 Duel Dagger. After the war, Actaeon upgrades a Duel Gundam to the GAT-X1022 Blu Duel. Unlike the original Duel Gundam's "Assault Shroud," the Blu Duel's outer armor is fully integrated into the body and protected by Phase Shift armor. The Blu Duel features an expanded set of armaments, including a pair of CIWS guns, beam sabers, anti-armor penetrators, retractable beam guns and a railgun. The Blu Duel serves as the personal unit of Mudie Holcroft, a member of the Alliance's secret Phantom Pain unit. In early C.E. 74, Mudie's unit is assigned to protect Phantom Pain's land carrier Bonaparte, as well as the massive GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam. The Bonaparte comes under attack from ZAFT forces, and Mudie is killed when several TMF/A-802W2 Kerberos BuCUE Hounds destroy the Blu Duel.
