Technical and Historical Notes

When the five scientists who design the XXXG-00W0 Wing Gundam Zero in AC 180 go their separate ways, each of them takes copies of the plans for their original Gundam design. Doctor J, who goes into hiding in the L1 colonies, designs and builds his own Gundam based on their original plans. Of the five Gundams that are built, Doctor J's XXXG-01W Wing Gundam most closely resembles the original Wing Zero in form and armament. Packing beam sabers, vulcan guns and machine cannons, its weaponry is topped off by its powerful buster rifle, capable of firing an energy beam wide enough to destroy several enemy mobile suits in a single shot. The buster rifle's only drawback is that it's only good for three shots before it needs to be recharged. "Gundam 01," as it's codenamed by the OZ forces, is also capable of transforming into a fighter-like "bird mode" for added mobility and atmospheric flight. Built of nearly-indestructible gundanium alloy, the Wing Gundam can withstand everything from heavy weapons fire to direct missile hits (even its own self-destruct system leaves most of the mobile suit fairly intact). These factors make the Wing Gundam an extremely tough monster to stop when it's launched to Earth to fight OZ during Operation Meteor in AC 195. Following its self-destruction at the hands of pilot Heero Yuy, the Wing Gundam is rebuilt by OZ ace pilot Zechs Merquise to continue a duel that ends inconclusively. Heero leaves the Wing Gundam on Earth when he heads into space, but later reclaims it on Earth. He abandons it when it's abandoned by OZ forces in Luxembourg, and OZ recovers and repairs the Wing Gundam. During the Eve Wars, Lady Une steals the Wing Gundam and sacrifices most of the suit to save the life of World Nation leader Treize Khushrenada.
