Technical and Historical Notes

During the 7th Space War, the United Nations Earth deployed three advanced new mobile suit designs to counter the Space Revolutionary Army. One of these new units was the GX-9900 Gundam X (or "GX"), and like its brethren GW-9800 Gundam Airmaster and GT-9600 Gundam Leopard, was equipped with a flash system, enabling a Newtype pilot to mentally remote-control a large number of bit mobile suits (or "mobile bits") - in the GX's case, the FX-9900 GX-Bit. The GX was also the most powerful of the Gundams, being armed with a satellite cannon capable of destroying a space colony with a single shot. The satellite cannon was powered by a super-microwave energy beam transmitted from a solar power station on the Moon; however, the GX required a Newtype pilot to use its flash system to contact the lunar station and power the weapon. As an added safety feature to prevent wanton use of the satellite cannon, the GX required the use of a removable G-controller, which not only served as the pilot's main control stick in the cockpit, but also acted as a key to activate the Gundam X and was used to arm and fire the satellite cannon. The GX was also armed with more standard weapons for conventional combat, such as a beam sword, vulcan guns in the chest, and a buster beam rifle that could double as a shield.

Although an unknown number of GXs were manufactured, one unit in particular was well-known, having been operated by Newtype pilot Jamil Neate in the 7th Space War during a failed attempt to stop the Space Revolutionary Army's mass colony drop operation. This GX was critically damaged in battle, and its remains were later recovered in A.W. 0015 by the New United Nations Earth to aid in the development of its new GX-9901-DX Gundam Double X. Around the same time, a second, intact GX unit was found stored in an abandoned military base on Earth, and it fell into the hands of young Vulture mercenary pilot Garrod Ran in April A.W. 0015. However, Garrod was a non-Newtype, and he needed the help of Newtypes like Tiffa Adill and Jamil on several occasions to fire the GX's devastating satellite cannon. Heavily damaged in a battle with Carris Nautilus' RMSN-008 Bertigo, the GX is upgraded to the GX-9900-DV Gundam X Divider. In A.W. 0024, an intact black GX unit was discovered by Vulture pilot Rick Aller.
